History

A break between meals

The origins of brunch date back to late 19th-century England, where it referred to the hearty meal eaten after Sunday service. The word itself — a portmanteau of ‘breakfast’ and ‘lunch’ — first appeared in writing in 1895, coined by the British journalist Guy Beringer, who described it as a more relaxed and cheerful way to start the day.

It was in the United States, in the 1930s, that it really took off, driven by the major cities and an emerging weekend culture. In France, it gradually gained popularity from the 1990s onwards, first in the capital, then in all the towns and cities where it’s lovely to potter about on a Saturday morning.

Today, brunch has become a genuine social ritual — a moment we choose, take the time to savour, and share.

Brunch in Bordeaux

Bordeaux has successfully embraced this culture of shared meals. From Les Chartrons to Saint-Michel, via the quays, numerous venues now offer their own take on brunch at the weekend. The best of them share a few common features: local produce, a genuine homemade approach, a menu that changes with the seasons, and, above all, an atmosphere that invites you to linger.

‘In the Saint-Michel neighbourhood, brunch fits perfectly with the spirit of the area — lively, diverse and rooted in a culture of good food without any fuss.’

The art of composing your plate

the buffet option — every sunday

Hot drink + cold drink + savoury buffet + sweet buffet - choose what you like

There are no rules for the buffet at Mlle Potts & Co. You get up, have a look at what’s on offer, and choose. A slice of cheese here, a spoonful of hummus there, a few roast potatoes that are still warm — and eggs, scrambled or fried, which you order depending on your mood that day. The savoury selection is put together without any set rules, simply by following whatever takes your fancy that particular Sunday.

Then comes the sweet section, bringing with it a sort of second wave of excitement. The mini crêpes await their toppings — a drizzle of maple syrup, a spoonful of jam, a little honey. The homemade granola crunches in its bowl of skyr or vanilla soya yoghurt, garnished with seeds and dried fruit. And on the side, the cake of the moment — a melt-in-the-mouth brownie, banana bread fresh from the oven, a generous cookie — puts the finishing touch to a plate you’ve put together at your own pace, to your own taste.

What makes this moment so special is precisely that freedom. No set menu, no timed service. Just a bountiful table, on a Sunday morning, bathed in the light of the Saint-Michel neighbourhood.
